What is IRS (Indian Revenue Service):

The Indian Revenue Service is a department where an officers are selected for this department through the Civil Service Examination. The Civil Service Exam conducted for the recruitment of the IRS Officers, IAS officers as well as some other reputed A grade Posts in the Government services. The Indian Revenue Service works under the Union Ministry of Finance. This i sthe department that is responsible to manage the direct and Indirect Taxes. There rae basically two types of reruitment in the same department:

  • IRS (Income Tax)
  • IRS (Customs and Central Excise)

Eligibility for IRS Officer Vacancy:

As I mentioned above, One will have to clear the CSE (Civil Service Examination) which is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. Here is the following criteria that one must have to apply for the Civil Service Examination:

  • A candidate must be an Indian. 
  • In Case of migration from any other country, he/she must have valid documents to proof his/her citizenship and as per the Government guidelines. 
  • A candidate must have done graduation in any discipline from any Government recognized college, University or Institute. A candidate who are in final year of the graduation or in final semester are also eligible to apply for the exam. 
  • The age of the candidate must be at least 21 years old to apply for the exam and it should not be more than 30 years old. 
  • There are some relaxation has been given to the candidates who belongs to the Reserved categories like OBC (Other Backward classes), SC/ST (Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes) etc. 
  • There are also number of attempts criteria:
  • For General Category Candidates: 6 attempts
  • For OBC Category Candidates: 9 attempts
  • For SC/ST Category Candidates: No restrictions

To get exact details about the relaxation criteria, One must check the details on the official website. The relaxation criteria keeps on changing every year. As per the last examination or vacancy, OBC would be given 5 years of relaxation in age and SC/ST would be given 7 years of relaxation in age. Process to Become an IRS officer:

The Selection of the IRS officer is done through the Civil Service Examination. To become an IRS Officer, one will have to appear for the CSE Examination which is conducted by the UPSC every year. There is no substitute of this exam, It is mandatory and only way to become an IRS officer in India. Let’s see the details of the Civil Service Exam:

Once the notification is released on the official website, You can apply for the exam, if you match with the required eligiblity criteria. The application forms are accepted Offline as well as online. you will need to submit the soft copy of the documents like High School marksheet, Intermediate Marksheet, Graduation Marksheet (if have), Caste certificate (if have) and some other documents. After this process, Candidate will appear for the Selection Phase round which is consists of Written Exams and Interview etc. 

There are basically two written examination and one Interview that one has to clear to get selected in the service. Here is the pattern and details about the Preliinary Exam (First Written Exam) and Mains Exam (Second Written Exam) and then personal Interview etc. 

Preliminary Exam:

After the application form, One will appear for the Preliminary Exam. The paper pattern of the Civil Service preliminary Exam would be like this:

All the questions in the Preliminary exam would be objective form with multilpe choice answers. There may a negative marking as well for wrond attempts questions. All the candidates who would clear the civil service preliminary Exam will proceed for the Mains Exam. The mains exam is tough as compared to the Pre Exam. Mains Examination:

The Mains Exam has more descriptive questions or you can say is almost all questions are descriptive. Here is the exam pattern of the Civil Service Mains Exam:

As I said above, that mains exam is tough to clear as compared to the Preliminary Exam. Most of the candidates clear the preliminary exam but fail to clear the mains exam. Personal Interview cum Personality Test:

After the Pre & Mains Exam, One will proceed for the Interview cum personality test. This phase is also tough in itself. An interviewer or examiner is free to ask anything, it completely depends on his/her mood. You just need to reply gently and have a positive attitude like an officer.
